Please flow down to managers of hourly personnel….

We have fielded several questions recently regarding a "special open enrollment" period for hourly employees as they missed

the annual open enrollment late last year due to the strike.

The "special" enrollment for the MDC West unions that will have their negotiated benefit changes effective September 1, 2006

is tentatively scheduled ON OR ABOUT JULY 26th THRU AUGUST 11th. Letters will go out to employees just before that period.

It is posted on the IAM Negotiations website under "Best and Final Offer Highlights" that states that medical benefits are effective until 9/1/06.

UPDATE FROM YOUR IAM AEROSPACE COORDINATORS:

We met today with Boeing representatives in Seattle, WA, to review
outstanding issues in the dispute that led to a strike on Nov. 2.

Boeing declared they are still unwilling to move from their current positions on
retiree health care and shifting health care costs to hourly employees.

Despite numerous suggestions that could serve as the basis for restarting
talks, Boeing refuses to alter their final positions.

The issues we are facing are worth fighting for. Boeing is a profitable
company and if they are allowed to decrease our current benefits, there is
no telling where or when they will stop.

Rest assured your Union is doing everything possible to bring this dispute to a
satisfactory conclusion. Your support and solidarity remains our greatest
bargaining asset.

CONTRACT  NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE!

Voting Schedule Set for Boeing Machinists

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) will present Boeing's latest proposal to striking Machinists for ratification voting on Feb. 1, 2006. Contrary to statements by Boeing, there was no "understanding" between IAM negotiators and Boeing that led to the latest offer.

"After negotiating for a day and a half, this was Boeing's new offer. It's that simple. Within the confines of labor law and the IAM Constitution, we are required to bring this back to our membership for a vote," said IAM spokesman
Bob Wood.

IAM members in Florida and California will begin voting on February 1, 2006, at 10 AM. Voting in Huntsville, AL will commence at 12 Noon, and IAM members in Decatur, AL will begin voting at 5 PM. All times are local time zones for
each location.

Results will be posted on the IAM website at:

Striking Machinists to Vote New Offer from Boeing

Birmingham, AL, January 28, 2006 - Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) on strike at Boeing space and defense facilities in Alabama, California and Florida will vote Wednesday, Feb. 1, on a revised contract offer from Boeing that has "substantive, not substantial," changes, according to IAM spokesman Bob Wood.

"We are nearing three months on strike," said Wood. "We have a duty to send this to the membership for a vote. It's democracy at its finest. The strikers at Boeing have the final say on whether to keep striking or not.

"There was some movement on the part of the company in insurance premiums and deductibles, as well as caps on premium costs," said Wood. "Boeing offered the establishment of a committee to find ways to reduce retiree health care costs for future hires." Additional information will be posted at http://www.goiam.org/issue.cfm?cID=5966

"For three months, we have fought Boeing to a standstill. We have taken on a giant like Boeing and persevered.  We are fighting a battle most people in this country have been unwilling or unable to take on. We are on strike not only for our families and communities, but for everyone who works for a living."

Negotiations resumed in Birmingham, AL on Friday, and were the first substantive talks since the strike began on November 2, 2005.

A spirited strike rally was held on Tuesday January 3rd at 10:00AM. Our purpose was to reinforce our efforts of bringing Boeing back to the table. A number of speakers and comments from the crowd provided some hearty and encouraging banter.

Senator Joe Dunn spoke about how he and his office support the strikers and that they will contact Boeing immediately to encourage them back to the table. Brother Dunn also said our issues are not only about us but also about those who were to come after us. Pensions and retiree medical benefits are agreements between workers and Boeing management from the past and that they were fair agreements then and are fair agreements now and Boeing should be ashamed of themselves for their position to withhold instead of uphold these agreements.

Martin Ludlow, from the Los Angeles Federation of Labor also added words of encouragement. He reminded us the bigger the odds the tougher the fight. Brother Martin said the advantage will swing our way soon and only through unity and solidarity will we cease that advantage. He defiantly asked us not to cross the picket line or lose our spirit and that there is daylight at the end of this strike. We all must hold the line and stay strong and committed. Lastly he expressed to succeed we must keep the energy high and to do that we must join hands and hearts.

General Vice President Lee Pearson vowed continued support from not only the Western Territory Staff but also from International Tom Buffenbarger as well. Brother Lee said all that can be done from the International level is being done. Grand Lodge Representatives have been assigned here from the beginning. He noted at no time did the union not want to meet with the company before or during the holidays. Boeing simply has refused to return to the table. Brother Lee said some IAM Districts have pledged support including District 190 in Oakland, District 751 in Seattle and District 947 in Long Beach. He too agreed and reminded us that our solidarity and convictions will get us through this tough battle. Brother Lee promised political support was asked for and it was made clear to them that this strike is a danger to our national security and if they don’t act we should all remember them when we go to the polling booths. Grand Lodge Representative Matt Mckinnon was attempting to contact Governor Swartzenegger to also take a look at our plight.

District Lodge President Gary Holt thanked all the speakers and he offered encouraging words of strength through solidarity. He said District Officers have been working hard and long hours the entire strike. Brother Holt said gathering political support was crucial and that press releases, phone calls and emails have been sent out to all medias yet even those that committed to come to the rally reneged. He asked for all to remain strong and committed and we must last one day longer than Boeing.

All the speakers were very supportive but this battle begins and ends with us on the front line. One comment from the crowd was for every scab that crosses the line means one day longer on the picket line. This is so true. The number of scabs has made this battle more difficult so we must remain strong and not cross that picket line. There are things we can do to help our cause. We can write letters to the editors from the many newspapers available. We can contact our Senators and Representatives at the state and federal levels to ask how they can help get Boeing back to the table. We can let our neighbors and community groups know our plight and ask for their assistance.  Ultimately our unity will prevail. Stand For Something Today or Fall For Anything Tomorrow! This is an old adage but still rings true today. Continue to fight the good fight for the right reasons and victory is around the corner.
